Introduction
Installing LED strip lights is one of the easiest DIY home upgrades you can do ā no electrician required. Whether you're adding under-cabinet lighting to your kitchen or illuminating your staircase, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
What You'll Need
- LED strip light roll (RGB, COB, or single colour)
- Compatible power supply / driver
- Aluminium channel with diffuser cover (optional but recommended)
- Connectors and corner pieces (if needed)
- Scissors or a craft knife
- Measuring tape
- Cleaning cloth and isopropyl alcohol
Step 1: Measure Your Space
Measure the length of the area you want to light. Add 10% extra to account for any mistakes or adjustments. LED strips can be cut at designated cut points (marked with a scissor icon on the strip) ā never cut between these marks or you'll damage the circuit.
Step 2: Choose the Right Strip for the Job
- Under-cabinet lighting ā Use COB strips for a smooth, dot-free light. Warm white (3000K) works best in kitchens.
- Stair lighting ā Use COB or single-colour strips in aluminium channels for a clean, professional look. Motion sensor controllers add a great safety feature.
- Accent and mood lighting ā RGB or RGBIC strips give you full colour control for living rooms and bedrooms.
Step 3: Prepare the Surface
This is the most important step for long-lasting adhesion. Clean the surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow it to dry completely before applying the strip. Avoid installing on painted surfaces that are peeling or textured ā the adhesive won't hold well.
Step 4: Install the Aluminium Channel (Optional but Recommended)
Aluminium channels protect your strip, improve heat dissipation, and give a professional finish. To install:
- Cut the channel to length using a hacksaw or the pre-cut service.
- Mount the channel to the surface using the included screws or double-sided tape.
- Slide the LED strip into the channel.
- Snap the diffuser cover into place for a frosted, even glow.
Step 5: Connect the Power Supply
Match your power supply voltage to your strip (most strips run on 12V or 24V DC). Calculate the wattage needed: multiply the strip's watts-per-metre by the total length. Always use a power supply rated at least 20% higher than your calculated wattage to avoid overheating.
Connect the strip to the power supply using the included connector or by soldering for a permanent connection.
Step 6: Test Before Finalising
Before sticking everything down permanently, plug in and test the strip. Check for:
- Even brightness along the full length
- Correct colour output
- No flickering (which may indicate a loose connection)
Once satisfied, peel the backing off the adhesive tape and press the strip firmly into place.
Step 7: Tidy Up the Wiring
Use cable clips or conduit to route the power cable neatly along walls or inside cabinets. Avoid leaving cables exposed where they could be a trip hazard or look untidy.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ā Cutting the strip in the wrong place ā always cut at the marked cut points
- ā Using an underpowered power supply ā this causes flickering and reduces lifespan
- ā Skipping surface cleaning ā the strip will peel off within days
- ā Bending the strip sharply around corners ā use corner connectors instead
- ā Exceeding the maximum run length ā voltage drop causes uneven brightness
